Michael Dirks Sr.

Carved Aleut Mask

Michael Dirks started carving while in high school, and since that time has made many masks all in the tradition of the ancient  Aleuts. Michael is an Aleut raised in the traditions of his ancestors while growing up on the Aleutian Island of Atka.  It takes approximately three days to complete one of his masks.  He also carves  wood blocks and enjoys silversmithing.  For him carving is  an ancient tradition and a hobby that helps keep his culture alive.
