Leon Anderson

Aleut Hunter with Sea Otter

Leon Anderson was here in Unalaska in 1934 and twenty six years later he carved his first piece.  He now has a soapstone sculpture AT Unalaska High School.  This carving is of an Aleut hunter holding a sea otter and petting it.  Leon started carving red cedar as a hobby while driving trucks in the Mt. Ranier Park area of Washington state.  The figures he created were never fully planned; they came to him while in the process of working on them.  Leon started working with soapstone in 1972.
