Aleut Icon: The Volcano Woman

    John Hoover, an Aleut, was born in Cordova, Alaska.  He started working as a child and his many jobs through the years included some at mining camps, commercial fisheries, and in oil fields.  When he started in boat building a little later, his interest in sculpting was sparked.   He started sculpting in 1965 and has made so many pieces he has lost count.  Mr. Hoover's art is well known both in Alaska  and nationwide.  John now lives and carves in the state of Washington.
