Gertrude Svarny

Dancing Aleut People

Aleut Woman Weaving a Parka
Gert Svarny is proud to be an Aleut artist from Unalaska.  She was born in Unalaska and lived here until the Aleut evacuation in 1942. Because of World War II her people were evacuated to mainland Alaska and during this time the Aleuts suffered many hardships. Gert managed to pull through like many other Aleuts that lived through this confinement.  Her carvings are usually made from soapstone and may take a few months to create.  Gertrude Svarny now has works displayed all over the country in areas such as Santa Fe, Seattle, and Anchorage.
