Gronholdt has always been fascinated by the culture of the Aleuts. He finished first and second grade in one year and was even at this time developing his fascination for Aleut Culture. At sixteen he began work as a deck hand on a fishing boat. Later he worked for the mail service hiking throughout the Alaskan Peninsula and Shumagin Islands to bring Mail to the trappers and fox farmers. He was always fond of hiking, and one time while walking on a beach on Unga Island he found a 30 million-year-old petrified redwood stump. Later he even found his wife through his affinity for thinking and walking; by reversing the batteries in her flashlight and making it useless, he walked her home. |
