Course 3

Glencoe: Mathematics; Applications and Connections

This course is offered to both seventh and eighth graders. Course 3 focuses on advanced problem solving, skill building, and introductory algebraic skills. Skills introduced in Course 2 will be built upon and mastered in this course. Students will concentrate on the skills necessary to be successful in high school math.
Welcome to Junior High Math!

Throughout the course of the year we will be using several different resources to enhance your study of mathematics. Namely the Glencoe Math Series, Arithmetic Developed Daily, and a number of supplemental materials will be used regularly. While it is not required, you may find it helpful to have a calculator for occasional use. Be clear however that calculators are discouraged in junior high math for most assignments, as I prefer to have you continually working on your calculation skills. You will be responsible for your own supply of notebook paper and pencils, both of which must come to class every day. Requirements of the math class are as follows:

1. Notebook: Your notebook is a collection of all assignments, filed in the order they were given, and can be in the form of a binder or folder. The front page of your notebook must be the assignment sheet, which lists assignments in the order they were given. While assignments will be graded daily, your notebook will also be graded twice per quarter and scored on organization, neatness, and completeness.

2. Homework: You will have math homework almost everyday. You are expected to come to class with your homework completed, as late homework will not be accepted. All assignments are to be completed in pencil.

3. Assessments: We will have assessments periodically. You will be notified in advance of these and will not be given any surprise tests or quizzes.

4. Arithmetic Developed Daily: This is a series of math review questions that we will complete each day. It will help to review previous material taught and prepare you for lessons to come. You must be on time to participate in this activity, so be on time to ensure full credit.

I am looking forward to learning with you. I have found that the most successful math class is one in which everyone participates. Math is a subject that you must dive into, be fearless, and work hard. If you are capable of this then you will be well on your way to having a successful year in math. My expectation is that all pieces of your work will be completed to the best of your ability. Feel free to ask questions and to provide input to help the class to be as successful as possible.
