Students in my Journalism and Photojournalism come to a production classroom. In these classes, we use current technology to create the Islander Yearbook, School Newspaper, web pages for the school site, the graduation programs and graduation slide show. Even though the work is stressful and demanding, students appreciate doing each step for a real-life reason.

Art
Art is a content
area where thinking is vital to the success of students. I keep my approach
"hand's on," with problem solving as the focus. I don't always tell
the students what I want them to learn but lead them to discovery by
giving them activities that naturally end with students "finding" the
knowlege on their own. Students who learn in this way never forget this
new knowledge. Students who take art classes learn about different cultures
and historical periods, as well as learn to understand and discuss art in an intelligent manner.
