| English 10: English 10, a.k.a. Sophomore English, is a reading and writing-intensive course, which is designed to integrate grammar and vocabulary skills with higher-level critique/analysis/synthesis skills. Through daily practice, students will become more adept at both written and oral forms of communication. | Short Papers will be assessed through the use of specific rubics given out ahead of time. (Extra copies are available upon request). Terminology and/or literal or factual information will be assessed through the use of objective tests and quizzes. |
| American Literature: Throughout this year-long survey course, we will be immersing ourselves in a blend of classical and contemporary American literature in an attempt to read and familiarize ourselvers with as many highlights of the American Canon as possible.. In addition to a well-rounded regimen of intensive reading, the course will also include a substantial focus on vocabulary building, grammar, writing, and critical thinking skills. | Short papers will be assessed through the use of specific rubrics given out ahead of time (Extra copies are available upon request). Terminology, literal and/or factual information will be assessed through the use of objective tests and quizzes. |
| Senior English: Students in Senior English will receive instruction in writing expository prose, including generation topics as part of the writing process. They will develop, organize, revise, and edit a variety of different types and lengths of compositions so that they are competent and confident communicators of the English language. In addition to writing shorter papers, students will be required to write a minimum of a ten to twelve-page research paper on the topic of their choice, using proper MLA (Modern Language Association) style documentation. Weekly vocabulary and grammar exercises will further enhance student's compositional language fluency | Daily writing assignments will be graded holistically on a 1-10 point scale and short papers and the research paper will be assessed through the use of specific rubrics given out ahead of time (Extra copies available on request). Terminology and/or literal or factual information will be assessed through the use of objective tests and quizzes. Students will know what is expected of them at all times and will have plenty of advance notice of due dates. |
| British Literature: Students in Senior English will 'transfer' to British Literature at the beginning of the 2nd semester. This course is designed to be a semester-long survey of British Literature. Focusing on a blend of both classic and contemporary British literature, we will be reading and familiarizing ourselves with just a few of the many literary highlights of British Civilization. In addition to a well-rounded regimen of intensive reading, the course will also include a substantial focus on building vocabulary, grammar, writing, and critical thinking skills. | Daily writing assignments will be graded holistically on a 1-10 point scale and short papers and the research paper will be assessed through the use of specific rubrics given out ahead of time.
