How to Improve Foreign Language Study Habits
Learning a foreign language is different from learning many other subjects. It is a skill oriented subject area that requires daily application.

Hints for success.

  1. Pay attention in class. There's no way to make up oral participation and practice by reading the book.

  2. Do not put off studying for a test until the night before the test.

  3. Review each daily assignment even though there may not have been a specific homework assignment given.

  4. Review material from the previous chapter for better retention.

  5. Be sure to understand the assignment before leaving. Ask questions in class because the teacher will not be available at home.

  6. Flash cards are very useful for learning verbs and vocabulary. Parents can help drill using these even if they do not know how to pronounce the words.

  7. Studying with another student from class can be helpful if work is actually accomplished.

  8. Come in to the teacher for extra help as often as is necessary before the end of the grading period.

  9. In the foreign language department no extra credit can be given as a general rule. The students are assigned enough work. If the student keeps up with the assignments and follows the guidelines given above, there will be plenty to keep them busy.

Learning a language is like climbing stairs. If a few steps are left out, it is hard to reach the next step.
