Hatchery Management
Course Overview:
Students in this course will capture, artificially spawn, and raise two species of Pacific salmon (contingent of ADF&G approval). These students will be responsible for the care of our fish and maintaining the school hatchery. Topics that will be examined during the school year include the following:
-Fish capture, artificial spawning, and fish rearing
-Net mending, commercial fishing techniques, fish processing
-Water chemistry and water quality measurements
-Hatchery maintenance procedures
-Salmon biology
-Freshwater and marine ecosystems
-Boating safety and seamanship

Grading Policy:
Your semester grade will be determined based on the following percentages:

1st Qtr: 40%
2nd Qtr: 40%
Final Exam: 20%

Semester Grade: 100%

Each quarter your grade will be based on the following rubric:

Homework and Quizzes: 20%
Hour Exams: 20%
Participation: 60%

Expectations and Requirements:
Students are expected to take an active role in collecting and maintaining our fish. Rubber boots and rain gear will be provided. Students will need to provide their own warm clothing. State permitting requirements for the fish captures must be scheduled ahead of time and will take place rain or shine. Students must participate in a "fish take" to obtain credit for this course.
Class participation is an important part of this class. Participation will be evaluated on a weekly basis and will include an assessment of the student's attitude, initiative, and willingness to work cooperatively in maintaining our hatchery.
