Native
Youth Olympics is a sport that was started in 1971 by a group of Native
Boarding home students. Traditionally Eskimo and Indian games, the
events were a way of keeping in shape during long winters. The constant
teaching of several sports in the harsh northern regions were stressed
to the youth. All over Alaska, students from 7th to 12th grade,
participate in a three-day tournament that includes events such as: scissor
broad jump, one and two foot high kick, kneel jump, stick pull, Alaskan
high kick, one arm reach, seal hop, wrist carry, foot pull. Unalaska City
School has been represented well in the past and they will once again
participate in the Statewide Meet on April 26 through April 28 in Anchorage.
The Cook Inlet Tribal Council sponsors this event each year, which hosts
about 40 teams from around the state. Native Youth Olympic athletes participate
in exercise and training programs for many weeks to prepare for their
event(s). Teamwork, sportsmanship, and dedication are stressed with
athletes.
