MARTI
ANN ROOKALA
Marti
Rookala joined our staff for the 2007-2008 School year and
she comes with 19 successful years of teaching experience in both
special education as well as elementary education. She completed her bachelor
degree in elementary education at the University of North Texas and has
completed many postgraduate hours in special education, ESL and reading.
Before moving to Unalaska,
she was a teacher in the North Slope Borough
School
District for 13 years. Having taught in remote and unique areas, moving
to Unalaska was a welcome challenge to her. She chose our school district
because she believes it has high standards and a true commitment to educating
the whole child, and she wanted to be part of this positive and progressive
district that places students first.
As a professional
educator, she strives to discover the best methods of instruction as well
to become familiar with current testing and curricula. But her most effective
way to teach she has found is "knowing my community and discovering
ways to link new learning to old. Forging bonds with parents by honoring
culture and becoming active in my community is essential to partnerships
with parents which is so key to student success".
