For the past thirteen years, my husband and I have worked for the North Slope Borough as teachers/administrator of Point Hope School. While my time as a teacher at Tikigaq was very precious to me, I now find that I am ready for a new Alaskan adventure. I was hired to teach high school English at Tikigaq High School; however, over the last thirteen years, I have had the pleasure of teaching many subjects in addition to English such as: Accounting, Business, Sewing, Drama/Speech, Photography, Basic Math, to name a few. In the area of English, I have seen many changes take place in the ideological theory of teaching English to second language learners. I feel that it comes down to teaching the basics in reading and writing before a school should move forward in any discipline. I have been adeptly taught to incorporate Scholastic's Accelerated Reader program into my high school English classes. |

I encourage all students to be actively involved with the school and community. I persuade students to join activities even if they aren't particularly talented in a specific area. This has helped many students find their little niche and become happier, more involved students. As an ex-Peace Corps Volunteer and avid traveler, I have had many cultural experiences that I have used to enhance the learning capacity in the classroom. I try to compare customs and philosophies whenever the lesson allows. I have found that this method of teaching enhances the student's ability to relate to story lines and situations in the books that each class reads. The students also welcome added value to their own traditions and customs. |
