Standard A: A student should be able to create and perform in the arts.
A student who meets the content standard should:
ACTIVITIES
· Explore and develop the voice by using whispering, singing, speaking and calling voice.
· Practice a wide variety of songs, finger plays, rhymes, echo songs, call and response songs.
· Practice matching pitch.
· Identify high and low pitch and up and down melodic direction.
· Practice using classroom instruments appropriately and musically.
· Practice maintaining a steady beat.
· Sing So, La, and Mi.
· Distinguish between fast and slow, long and short, loud and soft sounds.
· Recognize the use of symbols/pictures to represent musical concepts.
· Use movement to demonstrate musical phrases and sections.
· Listen to a guest musician tell about their instrument.

Standard
B: A student should be able to understand the historical and
contemporary role of the arts in Alaska, the nation, and the world.
A student who meets the content standard should:
ACTIVITIES
· Listens to and performs a wide variety of music from different cultures and historical periods.
· Listens to traditional Alaskan Native music.
· Listens to specific works of music (e.g. Peter and the Wolf).

Standard
C: A Student should be able to critique the student’s art and the art of
others.
A student who meets the content standard should:
ACTIVITIES
· Listen to and/or observes and discuss many examples of music, including recordings and live performances.
· Describe specific musical aspects of a given example (e.g. loud/soft, names of instruments, etc.).
· Practice and exhibit appropriate audience skills.
· Distinguish between strings, winds, and percussion instruments.
· Distinguish between adult male, adult female, and child voices.
