Standard A: A student should be able to create and perform in the arts.
A student who meets the content standard should:
ACTIVITIES
· Continue to refine the voice through echo singing, call and response songs, and expanded repertoire, with vocal production guidance of the teacher.
· Review high and low, up and down melodic direction, repeated pitches, and relate these to how they look on the 5 line staff, e.g. how notes look when they go up, etc.
· Read, write, and perform sol-mi and sol-me-la patterns.
· Practice steady beat.

· Practice using classroom instruments appropriately and musically.
· Create sound “stories” with instruments.
· Distinguish between adult male, adult female, and child voices.
· Show knowledge of same and different phrases; create simple question and answer phrases.
· Create introductions and codas; show knowledge of AB and ABA form; show knowledge of the repeat sign.
· Add accompaniments with body percussion and classroom instruments. These should include steady beat and ostinato accompaniments.
· Identify and use dynamics; loud, soft, getting louder, getting softer.
· Define the terms conductor, performer, and soloist.
· Talk to a guest musician.

Standard
B: A student should be able to understand the historical and
contemporary role of the arts in Alaska, the nation, and the world.
A student who meets the content standard should:
ACTIVITIES

Listen to and
perform a wide variety of music from different cultures and historical periods.

Listen and perform
when culturally appropriate traditional Alaskan Native music.
· Recognize specific works of music and well-known stories in music (e.g. The Nutcracker, Carnival of the Animals).

Standard
C: A Student should be able to critique the student’s art and the art of
others.
A student who meets the content standard should:
ACTIVITIES

Listen to and/or
observe and discuss many examples of music, including recordings and live
performances.

Describe specific
musical aspects of a given example (e.g. loud/soft, names of instruments,
etc.).
·
Practice and exhibit
appropriate audience skills.
·
Begin to analyze own
performance and created sounds according to criteria.
