Dear Unalaska City School District stakeholders,

This document is the Unalaska City School District curriculum guide in draft form.  It is the working description of what is taught in our school.  More exactly, it tells what students in our schools should know or be able to do.

This description of our curriculum is aligned with Alaska State Standards and will guarantee our students are prepared for the state Benchmark and Graduation Qualifying Exams.  The codes in parentheses at the end of each benchmark refer to the State Standard addressed by that benchmark.  I should note that one section of State Standards not listed separately in this document is Employability.   Those standards are imbedded throughout our curriculum.

In the spring of 1995, the UCSD Board adopted a strategic plan that has directed the district in its curriculum effort.  That plan called for Standards and Benchmarks to be developed by staff over a five-year period.  This document is a draft of the product of the last five years’ work to establish, in written form, the content we teach.   The next step is public review and input into this document.  That will take place in the spring of 2000.  It is hoped that the Board will adopt these standards and benchmarks by the end of the 1999-2000 school year.

All curriculum should be a work in progress, a living document.  We anticipate that this guide will continue to be reviewed and revised to accurately reflect the district’s needs and values.  Furthermore, there will be on-going editing for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with state standards.  The continuing process of selecting and adopting materials for our programs will continue.  The last major part of the curriculum to be developed will be Assessments to measure whether students have achieved the standards.  Over the next year, a basic framework of district assessments will be developed to identify how we assess student progress.

Sincerely,

Darrell J. Sanborn, Superintendent
